It takes a team!

Since July the Carnegie Mellon Quad$quad has been hard at work lining up sponsors, contacting keynotes, and snooping around Pittsburgh for the next big thing. We all love this city, and for us planning Forge has been a labor of love. We're a diverse, goofy group of globe-trotting archies spread across all 5 years. So who exactly do you have to thank for the awesomeness that is the 2016 Northeast Quad Conference?

In no particular order...

  • Hometown: Harrisburg, PA
  • Quad$quad Role: Conference Chair
  • Favorite thing about architecture: There are no correct answers....
  • Most excited for: Planning Forge has been so difficult but it has been an absolute labor of love! I can't wait to share all of our hard work with the 500+ attendees and explore Pittsburgh with so many new people.
  • Favorite place to eat: Mineo's Pizza House. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
  • Insider Tip: (See favorite place to eat)

  • Year: 5th
  • Hometown: Mitchellville, MD
  • Quad$quad Role: Contract Co-Queen
  • Favorite thing about architecture: The ability to create experiences for other people and  influence their well-being.
  • Most excited for: This is my first Quad Conference so it's going to be fun experiencing all of the hard work of the Quad$quad!
  • Favorite place to eat: Breakfast- Pamela's; Lunch or Dinner- Las Palmas or Stack'd; Dessert- The Milkshake Factory or Waffalonia
  • Insider Tip: Take cash with you everywhere, especially when you are exploring for food. Some places keep it old school and don't accept cards, but it makes the feel more authentic in my opinion.

  • Year: 3rd
  • Hometown: Chantilly, VA
  • Quad$quad Role:  Arts & Culture Track Chair
  • Favorite thing about architecture:  I've been described as a golden retriever; I love making people happy and being surrounded by people I love. I see architecture as a service profession, the idea of making people's lives better or more interesting using design is really important to me. I'm also involved in architecture education and outreach, and I spent last summer working at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh
  • Most excited for: For students from all over our region to discover what a unique and special place Pittsburgh is. There's so much to discover in this city, and the people here are some of the best!
  • Favorite place to eat: Social at Bakery Square
  • Insider Tip: Checkout Dive Bar and Grille in Lawrenceville

  • Year: 5th
  • Hometown: Seoul, Korea
  • Quad$quad Role:  Sustainability Track Chair
  • Favorite thing about architecture: One of the things that excites me about architecture is thinking about how people would occupy the space. Architects make certain design decisions anticipating certain human behavior; sometimes occupants respond in the anticipated matter but other times occupants will respond in a completely way
  • Most excited for: I remember attending Quad a few years ago and meeting extremely passionate people. It was truly an inspirational moment for me as an architecture student and rekindled the love I once had for architecture. As I go into my last semester of architecture school, I hope I can not only help spark some inspiration to people attending Forge, but also gain some as well through all the members of the Northeast Quad.
  • Favorite place to eat: Mineo's Famous Pizza House
  • Insider Tip: Most Pittsburgh restaurants are local, making each of them unique compared to other cities. My personal favorite meal, especially when I'm stressed or having a rough morning is a nice hot, cheap brunch from Pamela's Diner. Their "Morning-After" hits the spot every time ;) It is definitely a place that should be on the top of your list!

Alison Katz

Alison "Kool Kat" Katz

  • Year: 1st
  • Hometown: Saratoga Springs, New York
  • Quad$quad Role:  Public Interest Design Track Chair
  • Favorite thing about architecture: I chose to study architecture because it is a combination of art and science that creates forms and environments that shape everyone’s lives. It is important to keep in mind the power an architect has over other’s lives when designing. Improving the way others live is something everyone fortunate enough to study architecture should strive to do
  • Most excited for: As of right now I am most excited about the Beaux Arts Ball in the Andy Warhol Museum and, of course, the Public Interest Design Track.
  • Favorite place to eat:  The best place to eat when it is nice outside is Conflict Kitchen, they serve food from parts of the world that the United States is in conflict with. It is a great way to share and embrace the culture of counties the media often portray as our enemies
  • Insider Tip: Always bring an umbrella!

Kirk Newton

  • Year: 4th
  • Hometown: Houston, TX
  • Quad$quad Role:  Graphics, Identity, and Brand
  • avorite thing about architecture: Something that excites me about architecture, more than any other profession, is how much the profession values discourse and skepticism. Architects are certainly not afraid to criticize others, but the best are always critically analyzing their own beliefs and impacts.
  • Most excited for: I’m most excited for the talks by James Ramsey on his vision for urbanism, and also the chance to see Pittsburgh—a city I lived, loved, and sometimes hated—in a completely new way.
  • Favorite place to eat:  My favorite place to eat is the Smiling Banana Leaf. It’s this tiny little Thai restaurant in Highland Park. It’s a little ways from campus but absolutely worth the detour
  • Insider Tip: Before you make up you mind that Pittsburgh is a stodgy old steel town, with some hills, cute restaurants and some football fans, check out Hot Mass and we’ll show you how to party!

  • Quad$quad Role:  Finance Co-chair
  • Favorite thing about architecture: The ability for architecture to intersect with almost anything or any other field - from engineering to technology to fine art or history.
  • Most excited for: For everyone across the northeast to experience Pittsburgh! Everytime I get to share exciting things about the city or show people around I fall in love with the 'burgh all over again. "Lyke dis if u cry errytim"- jk
  • Favorite place to eat:  Can I say Will Penn for wings? William Penn Tavern in Shadyside has the world's best wings... Kitchen sink flavor is BAE.
  • Insider Tip:  Be sure to check out Rosyln Place in Shadyside - it has the last wood paved street in the country!

Alina Kramkova

  • Year: 1st
  • Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA
  • Quad$quad Role:  Finance Co-chair
  • Favorite thing about architecture: The ability for architecture to intersect with almost anything or any other field - from engineering to technology to fine art or history.
  • Most excited for: I’m mostly excited for the key speakers, especially James Ramsey because the Low Line Lab is on my list of places I want to visit someday.
  • Favorite place to eat:  Highly recommend E2 in Highland Park! If you get the chance to stop by, their brunch (especially the donuts) is the best
  • Insider Tip:  I grew up in the east end and I’m definitely biased in saying that Squirrel Hill is one of the neighborhoods that you should visit. But also if there’s anything I recommend to do in Pittsburgh, its to really go out and explore as many as you can if not for the architecture, but for the food scene

Chandler Archbell

Chandler "Chang Bang" Archbell

  • Year: 4th
  • Hometown: Virginia Beach, VA
  • Quad$quad Role: Technology Liaison, the one who Liaises with the Technology. Also I make the videos.
  • Favorite thing about architecture: I embrace a lot of aspects of architecture, from digital fabrication to sustainability and resilience.  These, however, aren't what interest me about architecture; they are what I believe are essential to the profession.  The reason I got into architecture is no longer the reason I have stayed with it, but I will say one thing: I am fascinated by successful architecture's ability to change the whole atmosphere of a place, and most importantly, to make people happy
  • Most excited for: John Fetterman.  He's a badass.
  • Favorite place to eat: There are too many great places to choose from, but when I can't decide my default favorite is BRGR.
  • Insider Tip: Pittsburgh is not on a grid. At all. And there are hills. Huge ones. As such, even if it's a mile away, it'll probably take 30 minutes to get there.

  • Most excited for: The tour of the Tower at PNC Plaza
  • Favorite place to eat: Wafflonia. Either the Squirrel Hill location or the one in Schenley Plaza!
  • Insider Tip: Go to the Strip District on a weekend morning for incredible markets, snacks and brunch!

  • Most excited for: For CMU SoA to experience all that AIAS has to offer!  Sometimes it can be hard to explain, but seeing the amazing collaboration of AIAS Northeast and National is going to be fantastic.
  • Favorite place to eat: Right there with Jenny! We are regulars at $0.50 wing night at Will Penn! Kitchen sink wings with a side of tots is the way to go.
